poetry

In college I used to be able to write poetry,
I just did,
It never occurred to me,
That someday I might feel like I couldn’t write poetry.
But sure enough,
Here I am,
Pretending to be William Carlos Williams.
I was pretty good too,
My poetry professor,
I can’t remember her name, but,
Our assignment was to write a poem on the theme of
Eggs, or seeds,
Life-bearing things.
Mine was called:
‘I can do a handless headstand on Spring Equinox’
It was about a boy with an eggshell skull.
They’re fragile you know,
My head was the yolk.
And at the end of the semester,
For a little treat,
The whole class went over to the campus burger joint,
And ate French fries,
We read pieces of poetry for our classmates.
She asked me to read mine first,
The one about the egg!
Yes indeed,
I was quite a poet then.

Honestly,
This is the first poem I've written,
In like,
Three years,
Or so.
In fact,
It’s been so long since I wrote a one,
That I don’t even remember,
How to tell,
A good poem,
From a bad one.
